Price Impact Asymmetry of Block Trades: An Institutional Trading Explanation
نویسنده
چکیده
This article develops a theoretical model to explain the permanent price impact asymmetry between buyerand seller-initiated block trades (the permanent price impact of buys is larger than that of sells). The model shows how the trading strategy of institutional portfolio managers creates a difference between the information content of buys and sells. The main implication of the model is that the history of price performance influences the asymmetry: the longer the run-up in a stock’s price, the less the asymmetry. The intensity of institutional trading and the frequency of information events affect the asymmetry differently depending on recent price performance.

Optimal control of execution costs
We derive dynamic optimal trading strategies that minimize the expected cost of trading a large block of equity over a fixed time horizon. Specifically, given a fixed block SM of shares to be executed within a fixed finite number of periods 1, and given a price-impact function that yields the execution price of an individual trade as a function of the shares traded and market conditions, we obt...
متن کاملInvestor Uncertainty and Order Flow Information
This paper proposes an alternative explanation for the price impact of trades created by information that is carried in the order ßow. Unlike models that consider information asymmetry about the future cash ßows (or liquidation value) of the asset, the approach here postulates uncertainty about the distribution of preferences and endowments of investors. This investor uncertainty results in p...

In financial markets, the symmetry of information and the homogeneous interpretation of information among traders is one of the main conditions for market efficiency, but these conditions are in fact violated. In this paper first; we accurately estimated the dynamic measures of trades stemming from information asymmetry and diverse opinions among investors indices by a hidden Markov model. Ther...
متن کاملQuantifying immediate price impact of trades based on the k-shell decomposition of stock trading networks
Traders in a stock market exchange stock shares and form a stock trading network. Trades at different positions of the stock trading network may contain different information. We construct stock trading networks based on the limit order book data and classify traders into k classes using the k-shell decomposition method. We investigate the influences of trading behaviors on the price impact by ...
متن کاملAn empirical analysis of the role of the trading intensity in information dissemination on the NYSE
In this paper, we use high-frequency data on five frequently traded stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in the year 1999 to examine the price impact of trades and its relation to the trading intensity. We show that the distribution of the absolute price change with fast trading firstorder stochastically dominates the distribution of the absolute price change with slow trading. M...
